YOUR GIFTS ARE VITAL!
The Bare Bones Budget for the school year that starts in September is $60,000. This amount funds operating expenses for an estimated 300 students in the primary and preschool classes:
• 13 salaries with a 15% raise
• Textbooks and class-room supplies
• Classroom benches and administrative fees
Plus this amount provides a daily meal for an estimated 523 students in all 16 grade levels.
Thanks to the amazing generosity and efforts of many supporters, we have enough funds to cover these basics for the first 5 months of the school year. God is good! We hope to raise the balance of $42,000 for the remainder of the school year by the end of January 2020.
Staff Salaries and impact of currency devaluation & inflation:
The economic situation for the people of Haiti continues to worsen due to the devaluation of the Haitian currency of 30% over the last 12 months! This devaluation coupled with rampant increases in the cost of imported rice and other goods makes providing for a family all the more precarious.
We know our teachers struggle to provide the basics for their families and last year’s raise has definitely been eroded away. A salary that was equivalent to $123 USD last September is now closer to $85. This breaks our hearts and strengthens our commitment to work with our Haitian partners to increase the minimum salary for teachers to the equivalent of $150 USD per month beginning September 2020.
People ask what will happen if we don’t raise enough money? Should expenses need to be reduced to provide funds to honor the salary contracts that the priest signs with the 13 staff members, the options would involve feeding the students in 7th grade and above (47%) fewer days. We know that God is at work in this ministry and we go forward trusting him in all matters, especially the challenges – big & small.
TOGETHER WE CAN BE PART OF THE PLAN TO GIVE THESE PRECIOUS YOUNG PEOPLE HOPE AND A FUTURE!
YOUR GIFT OF ANY AMOUNT WILL BE A BLESSING!
